One dies on the highway. 4 crashes near Auto Center Drive

ANTIOCH — An Antioch man died Sunday night after a fatal car crash on Highway 4, authorities said.

Rescuers responded to the scene around 9:36 p.m. for a reported westbound crash just east of the Auto Center Drive/Somersville Road exit.

CHP officers found an overturned Toyota 4Runner in the far left lane of the roadway when they arrived at the scene and met with firefighters from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District providing medical attention to a man nearby, CHP officer Damian Cstaro said Sunday.

Contra Costa firefighters provided medical aid to the driver, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Early Monday, authorities identified him as 25-year-old Benjamin Jaffin.

In a statement Monday, the CHP said Jaffin was driving at an unknown speed when he crashed into the center median and was ejected from the SUV. The roads were slippery due to Sunday night’s storm, which was less than two hours old when the crash occurred.

Officers closed several westbound lanes near the crash, but did not issue a Sig alert due to limited effect on traffic.

The death was the first of the year on Highway 4. In 2021, 16 people died on the highway in collisions. Highway 4 connects the western part of Contra Costa County to the eastern part and passes Stockton.
